Proposed water entities and the Nelson/Blenheim regions

Adam Irish made this Official Information request to Department of Internal Affairs

The request was partially successful.

From: Adam Irish

Dear Department of Internal Affairs,

Under the Official Information Act I request all documentation regarding the decision to split the South Island into having the top part not part of entity D. The reasoning for this does not appear obvious as Wellington is far more geographically isolated from Nelson and Blenheim than Christchurch is, due to the Cook Strait. This would incur significantly more travel costs etc. It appears this is done more for political purposes than efficiency.

Yours faithfully,

Adam Irish

Dear Eman Abdine,

Under the Official Information Act, with respect to "recognises whakapapa linkages between the North and South Islands, including iwi boundaries that span the two islands." Does the Department Inturnal Affairs Te Tari Taiwhenua not consider that the electoral seat of Te Tai Tonga adequately represents southern Maori? And if it does then way wouldn't the South Island be a single entity.

Yours sincerely,

Adam Irish

Kia ora Adam

There were a range of factors that were considered, as outlined in the materials previously provided.

Electoral boundaries do recognise iwi affiliation, but also contain other criteria. The material available on the departmental website provides a range of scenarios that were identified, including the option of a South Island entity.

These issues are also well traversed in the Cabinet papers that are available on the website.
