MB ChB rural general category
Jane made this Official Information request to University of Otago
University of Otago did not have the information requested.
From: Jane
Dear University of Otago,
I was wondering why Otago university has a biased category for what defines a rural area. Could I please get a comment for why a map has been chosen for what is a rural area? My view point is that if I lived 1 km away from town I would be in a rural area, there is no point behind this as the doctor would have to come back in town a so called 'urban area' to practice. Auckland university has separated it my districts, why has Otago university not chosen this?
Other questions:
1. What is the lowest gpa for entry in medicine via general category (HSFY) via rural pathway (only rural pathway)
2. Are people ever considered for rural category if their hometown is semi urban but is urban all around with a small practice in need for doctors?
3. What is the median gpa for entry into medicine via the (HSFY) category under the rural category?
4. Would I be considered for rural category if I had spent my primary school years (over 4) in a rural area? And currently have moved back to a rural area?
Yours faithfully,
Jane

We refer to your information request dated 1 August made under the Official Information Act 1982 (Act). You have requested information in relation to entry into the Medicine programme for Health Sciences First Year via the New Zealand Rural Origins sub-category.
The Act requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no later than 20 working days after the day we received your request. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time limit. However, we will endeavour to respond to you sooner if possible.
This extension is necessary to allow for the completion of consultations necessary to make a decision on your request.
If you are not satisfied with our extension of time, you have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the Act. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
