From: UoO - Official Information Act
University of Otago
Kia ora Dan
We refer to your request under the Official Information Act dated 28 June
2021. You have requested information regarding the UCAT and GPA thresholds
for entry into the 2022 Dentistry Programme.
We set out our responses to each of your questions below.
(a) UCAT threshold for all 5 sections of the UCAT for entry
into Dentistry for 2022.
The UCAT threshold is set annually by the Dental Admissions Committee. The
UCAT threshold for entry into the 2022 Dentistry Programme has not been
set yet. It is expected to be set in September 2021.
(b) GPA requirement for entry into Dentistry for 2022.
The threshold for entry into the 2022 Dentistry Programme will be cohort
dependent and will not be known until the final grades have been received
at the end of the year.
However, in case it is helpful we set out below the programme requirements
for the Health Science First Year and Graduate categories, which includes
the minimum grade requirements. Please note that these are the minimum
requirements, and the actual results required are likely to be higher than
this.
University of Otago Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) category:
To be considered for admission under the Health Sciences First Year
category, an applicant must:
i. Be enrolled in the Health Sciences First Year
course at the University of Otago;
ii. Pass all of the papers prescribed for the University
of Otago Health Sciences First Year course, normally with a minimum
average of 70%, with no paper mark less than 65%;
iii. Meet any other requirements as determined by the
Dental Admissions Committee.
Selection of applicants who have met these criteria will be based on their
average mark in the Health Sciences First Year papers.
Graduate category:
To be considered for admission under the Graduate category, an applicant
must:
i. Have complete, normally in the minimum academic
time, at least one of the following qualifications awarded by a university
in New Zealand:
o A bachelor’s degree; or
o A bachelor’s honours degree; or
o A bachelor’s degree followed by a postgraduate diploma;
Note:
(i) The qualifying degree for the Graduate category will
be the first university degree awarded to that applicant.
(ii) The grades obtained in a bachelor’s honours degree (if
separate from the qualifying degree) or postgraduate diploma will be
included in the GPA calculation, along with the qualifying degree.
ii. Meet any other requirements as determined by the
Dental Admissions Committee.
iii. Applications must be received within three years of
completion of the qualifying degree. Normally, the date of completion will
be taken as the end of the teaching period in which the final paper or
papers included in the programme are undertake. Repeat applications within
the eligibility period are allowed.
The applicant must have passed the papers of the Health Sciences First
Year course of their equivalents. The average grade for all papers in the
qualifying programme must be at least B (grade point average (GPA) of 5).
Selection of applicants who have met these
criteria will be based on their GPA, as calculated by the Division of
Health Sciences.
