Mâori prison population. Your request has been considered under the
Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).

 

You requested:

               

                How many Maori male prisoners (both sentenced and on
remand) are currently in jail. I could not find this information in any
quarterly report of prison statistics.

 

As you are aware, quarterly prison and and community-based statistics and
some demographic breakdowns of those populations are available at the

Corrections also reports more fulsome demographic breakdowns of the prison
and community-based population each year in a consistent format, via the

This report includes the statistics you are seeking. For a breakdown of
prisoners by ethnicity and gender based on a snapshot of the prison
population as at 30 June 2020, please refer to page 121 (for remand
prisoners) and page 124 (for sentence prisoners) of the Corrections
Volumes Report 2019/20.

 

Equivalent statistics are also available in earlier years’ reports. The
Corrections Volumes Report 2020/21 will be published online in due course.
