I would like to request the ongoing (not setup) extra cost to NZ post of tracking a parcel/package.
Jonathan Berry made this Official Information request to New Zealand Post Limited
Response to this request is long overdue. By law New Zealand Post Limited should have responded by now (details and exceptions). The requester can complain to the Ombudsman.
From: Jonathan Berry
Dear New Zealand Post Limited,
I would like to know what ongoing (not setup) costs are involved in tracking a package.
And if possible a breakdown of those costs.
Not including any customer service costs related to tracking inquiries, just the cost of power and data transmission and storage of such information and any added human handling needed to reorient a package so that it can scan if that would be required (or, the cost of any powered mechanism to achieve the same) and anything else I might not be considering related to how much it costs to track an item.
There is a cost to tracking a package and I presume and accept as reasonable that packages might cost very little extra to track compared to the extra charge this service attracts. But I would like to know how cost prohibitive it would be for NZ Post to potentially "track anyway" all otherwise untracked parcels in order to ensure the integrity of their operation (anytime some unique markings (barcodes, Q codes, alphanumeric) exist on the package).
If this is not a figure that can be easily calculated on a per package basis, an answer of "negligible" would be accepted as an answer.
Yours faithfully,
Jonathan Berry
