The results of the 2020 election Vote Compass question on gender self-identification

Beth Johnson made this Official Information request to Television New Zealand Limited

The request was successful.

From: Beth Johnson

Dear Television New Zealand Limited,

In the lead up to the 2020 Election the Vote Compass survey asked a question "People should be allowed to change the sex listed on their birth certificate, without having to undergo a medical treatment to change their gender."

What are the results for this question?

Yours faithfully,
Beth Johnson

Dear Beth

I refer to your request below.

While we asked that question, like many posed within Vote Compass we did not run a story on the outcomes.

We have run a specific report on the results, which are as follows:

People should be allowed to change the sex listed on their birth certificate, without having to undergo a medical treatment to change their gender.

Strongly disagree 29%
Somewhat disagree 18%
Neutral 20%
Somewhat agree 15%
Strongly agree 14%
Don't know 3%

The findings are based on 181,430 respondents who participated in Vote Compass from August 30, 2020 to October 19, 2020. We should point out that, unlike online opinion polls, respondents to Vote Compass are not pre-selected. Similar to opinion polls, however, the data are a non-random sample from the population and have been weighted in order to approximate a representative sample. Vote Compass data have been weighted by gender, age, education, language, region and past vote to ensure the sample's composition reflects that of the actual population of New Zealand according to census data and other population estimates.
