Dr Robert Shaw made this Official Information request to Ministry of Education
The request was successful.
      From: Dr Robert Shaw

    Dear Ministry of Education,
1. I request the following secondary school statistics for each of the available last five years: Total number of under-16 years of age suspensions nationally, total number of exclusions nationally, the total roll for each of those years.
2.I would appreciate any age or level related statistics which you hold regarding suspensions and exclusions. My task to gain a perspective on how often schools resort to this action and who are the students most at risk of this action.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Robert Shaw

    Dear Dr Robert Shaw

Thank you for your request for information below. The Ministry will
consider and respond to your request in accordance with the Official
 Information Act 1982 (the Act).

The Act allows up to 20 working days for a response, making 25 January
2021 the latest date for our response to you.  If more than 20 working
days are needed due to the potential workload involved in answering your
request, we will notify you accordingly.
Under the Official Information Act (see definition of “working day” in
section 2), the period between 25 December – 15 January are not considered
to be “working days” for the purposes of calculating the 20 working day
timeframe for proving a response under the Act.

Please note, the Ministry may publicly release on our website the response
to your request five days after you have received it. Any personal
 information will be removed.

In the interim, if you have any questions about your request, please email
 [1][email address].

Kind regards

    Kia ora Robert,

Thank you for your request. Please find attached data on the number of
suspensions and exclusions at secondary schools, along with comparative
 cohort rolls for each year.

For your information, there is more data on suspensions and exclusions
online at this link: [1]Stand-downs, suspensions, exclusions and
expulsions from school | Education Counts

This online data uses age-standardised rates. These are expressed as the
number of suspensions and exclusions per 1,000 students enrolled.
Age-standardisation allows a fair comparison between different cohorts. In
any given year the schooling population will have a different age
distribution. By standardising for age we can compare across years. Most
suspensions and exclusions occur between the ages of 13 and 15.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions, or if
there is anything else we can help with.

Nāku noa, nā
