Tēnā koe Valerie,
RE: OIA 19-20-18 NZTE Engagement with NZDIA.
I refer to your Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 18 June
2020 for the following material outlined below:
1. Any information about the NZTE relationship with the New Zealand
Defence Industry Association from 2017-2020.
2. Any information about overseas defence industry conferences including,
but not limited to, the Land Forces Australia, CANSEC or IMDEX Asia
conferences.
3. NZTE information relating to the defence industry 2017-2020.
It appears that your original request will need to be clarified or amended
to enable us to respond. Your request for “any information” is broad.
We are asking if you are willing to refine the scope of your request to a
summary of NZTE engagements with the entities outlined in your questions.
We would also like to focus question two on speaking engagements by NZTE,
or trade booths operated or shared by NZTE, at defence industry
conferences.
In terms of question three, could you clarify what information you are
seeking? In its present form we are unsure how to answer this question. We
are trying to understand if this question refers to information NZTE holds
on industry bodies (domestic and global) or broader sector information,
for example.
To aid this clarification, would we able to have a discussion with you
about how we refine this request? If so, I would appreciate a phone number
to call you on.
Please note, any clarification or amendment of a request is considered to
be a new request for the purpose of calculating the maximum statutory
timeframe for response—see section 15(1AA) of the Act.

I am happy to accept your proposed refinement of question 2, and happy for your response to question 3 to be suspended for the time being.
Thanks.

Kia ora Valerie,
RE: OIA 19-20-18 NZTE Engagement with NZDIA
Thank you for your email of Friday 3 July requesting the following
information:
1. Any information about the NZTE relationship with the New
Zealand Defence Industry Association from 2017-2020.
2. Any information about overseas defence industry conferences where NZTE
had speaking engagements or operated/shared trade booths, including but
not limited to, the Land Forces Australia, CANSEC or IMDEX Asia
conferences.
The Official Information Act requires that we advise you of our decision
on your request no later than 20 working days after the day we received
your request. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time
limit and we are writing to notify you of an extension of the time to make
our decision, to Friday 11 September.
This extension is necessary because your request is for a large quantity
of information and meeting the original time limit would unreasonably
interfere with our operations and the consultation necessary to make a
decision on your request are such that a proper response cannot reasonably
be made within the original time limit.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of
this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.
