Dear Wellington City Council,

I have applied twice to be appointed to the Accessibility Advisory Committee. I am imminently qualified for appointment.

However, I am aware that other applicants may be just as qualified as I am also aware that some applicants are not qualified but are nevertheless appointed to council committees.

What is the AAG's procedure for selecting an appointee?

When I applied the first time in early 2019 I never heard back at all. I wrote several letters to the AAG asking for feedback regarding my failed application. To this day I have not been responded to on the first attempt.

Communication is improved this time but only because I keep writing to the committee reminding them to keep me in the loop.

I want to find out why the AAG achieve nothing for people with disabilities, i.e. why they are ineffective at council. Also, to what extent do politics come into decision making regarding applicants for membership of the Accessibility Advisory Group. Various disability advocates from different disability agencies inform me that the Wellington City Council is itself nepotistic and its committees and sub-committees follow that example e.g. in the case of the AAG, membership of the group is based on who particular people know rather than whether an applicant has experience, qualifications and competence

I can advise that your request for information has been granted at no

·        Terms of Reference for the Accessibility Advisory Group (please
refer to Appendix C: Recruitment and Selection Process)

·        Process flow chart for the Accessibility Advisory Group
recruitment process

 

For your context, applicants’ responses to interview questions were scored
and weighted according to priority for the Accessibility Advisory Group.
The key competencies that were sought included time to commit to the work,
communication skills, focus on a variety of impairments, team fit,
established networks and relationship building, political aptitude and
influencing skills. Scores were then totalled and referees were contacted
for the highest scoring candidate.
