Register of assets (orange tags found on DOC-managed structures)
Josh McArthur made this Official Information request to Department of Conservation
The request was successful.
From: Josh McArthur
Dear Department of Conservation,
I am seeking data on the location, type, and any other metadata available for DOC assets - in particular structures such as stairs, bridges, and buildings (huts).
By 'asset', I am referring to any structure tagged with an orange plastic tag containing a reference number. It is my assumption that DOC holds data on the structure referenced by the number etched into this tag. I am not seeking information on any other type of asset.
If centrally available, I would also submit that this dataset be provided to data.govt.nz for others to use, particularly if the information held is geospatially-referenced.
Yours faithfully,
Joshua McArthur

Dear Joshua McArthur
Thank you for your Official Information Act request to the Department of
Conservation, dated 31 October 2019. You requested the following: -
Register of assets (orange tags found on DOC-managed structures)
1. Data on the location and type of DOC assets i.e. any structure tagged
with an orange plastic tag containing a reference number
2. Any other metadata available for DOC assets - in particular structures
such as stairs, bridges, and buildings (huts).
3. That this dataset be provided to data.govt.nz for others to use,
particularly if the information held is geospatially referenced.
1. Data on location and type of DOC assets i.e. any structure with an
orange plastic tag containing a reference number
The Department uses orange and green tags to identify the visitor related
assets that you have referenced. The attached spreadsheet includes all the
visitor assets (past and present), that DOC manages. This spreadsheet is a
subset of the data that DOC holds for all visitor related assets. There
are 80 characteristics for each asset in the database, and thousands of
condition and quality assessment fields.
2. Any other metadata available for DOC assets - in particular structures
such as stairs, bridges, and buildings (huts).
The metadata for the assets included in the spreadsheet is listed
below. I have used the following definition for metadata, “a set of
data that describes and gives information about other data”. As noted,
there are 80 characteristics for each asset in the database, and
thousands of condition and quality assessment fields. The metadata for
these attributes have not been included. Should you require them,
please contact the Director Operations Planning (details below).
a. Equipment – this is the system number assigned to every equipment
(asset) that has been installed or removed (uninstalled) since DOC
started managing its assets in an asset management system
b. Equip. Description – is the name given to the asset
c. Start Grid Ref (E,N) – is the location of the asset
d. End Grid Ref (E,N) – is the location of the end of a track asset
e. Region – is the DOC Region in which the asset is located
f. Functional Location – is the name of the site on which asset is
located
g. Destination – is the name given to a group of functional locations. It
is used to define the standard of the services at that site
h. Equipment Status – is the current status of the asset. Where the asset
no longer exists, the status is ‘removed’.
i. Tech ID – is the number on the Orange or Green tag found in the field
j. Equipment Category – is the class of asset
k. Equipment Type – is the subclass or asset type
l. Construction type – is the predominant construction material
m. Class type of Object – is used to provide more detail of the Equipment
Type
n. Known Build Date – is the date (if known) that the asset was
constructed/installed. The default setting is the first day of the
month that the asset was installed. No date indicates that there was
no recorded built date prior to 1996
3. That this dataset be provided to data.govt.nz for others to use,
particularly if the information held is geospatially referenced.
The Department is not presently in a position to provide the dataset
to data.govt.nz for others to use.
