Sue Grey made this Official Information request to Landcare Research New Zealand Limited

The request was refused by Landcare Research New Zealand Limited.

From: Sue Grey

Dear Landcare Research New Zealand Limited,

Please could you provide all relevant official information you have to show:
1 Why plastic bottles was chosen in the Landcare protocol for sampling water for 1080 contamination
2 what assessment has been done of the possibility of 1080 collected in plastic water bottles underreporting 1080 in water dues to adsorption or some other chemical process
3 when Landcare first considered the possibility that 1080 in water might be underreported due to adsorption or some other loss to the sampling bottle or the sampling process
4 what steps has Landcare taken or is Landcare taking to review it's 1080 water sampling protocol to ensure any 1080 contamination of water is accurately tested and reported
5 any correspondence within Landcare or with third parties regarding the risk of 1080 contamination in water being underreported due to any aspect of the sampling methodology
Thank you and kind regards
Sue Grey LLB (Hons),

Dear Sue

I refer to your request of 21 October concerning information on protocols
for sampling water for 1080.  Our responses to your italicised questions
are set out below.

Please could you provide all relevant official information you have to
show:

1 Why plastic bottles was chosen in the Landcare protocol for sampling
water for 1080 contamination

As 1080 is an ionic compound, it is considered less likely to bind to
plastic than glass.  Also, glass bottles are at higher risk of breaking
when frozen than plastic bottles.

2 what assessment has been done of the possibility of 1080 collected in
plastic water bottles underreporting 1080 in water dues to adsorption or
some other chemical process

We are not aware that any assessments have been carried out of 1080 in
water being underreported due to adsorption to plastic or other chemical
processes.

3 when Landcare first considered the possibility that 1080 in water might
be underreported due to adsorption or some other loss to the sampling
bottle or the sampling process

Landcare Research has not previously considered the possibility of this
happening and it is not considered in the literature from which the
testing method has been developed.

4 what steps has Landcare taken or is Landcare taking to review it's 1080
water sampling protocol to ensure any 1080 contamination of water is
accurately tested and reported

The water sampling protocol was last reviewed in October 2018 and no
further reviews are scheduled.

5 any correspondence within Landcare or with third parties regarding the
risk of 1080 contamination in water being underreported due to any aspect
of the sampling methodology

Landcare Research has not had any correspondence on this matter therefore
we are declining this part of your request under section 18(e) of the
Official Information Act as the information does not exist.  You have the
right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this
decision.

Kind regards

Pamela Pye
