Airline travel.

Andrew Crow made this Official Information request to Inland Revenue Department

The request was successful.

From: Andrew Crow

Dear Inland Revenue Department,

It has been shown that Air travel is a large contribution to global climate change.

I am keen to get measurements or numbers to show what government is doing about this.

Under OIA I request:

1. Total number of airline tickets purchased in 18/19 financial year.

2. Breakdown by domestic vs international.

3. Any internal plans to reduce airline travel.

4. Job titles of the top 5 travellers.

5. Any other information that would help the public understand the departments use of airline travel.

N.B ; this request is being sent to a number of government departments.

Yours faithfully,

Andrew Crow

Good afternoon

Thank you for your Official Information Act (OIA) request for information
on air travel.

Could you please clarify the following:

o For question 1, could you please confirm whether your definition of
‘tickets’ relates to individual legs of a trip or for the trip as a
whole. E.g. a return trip could have at least 2 tickets, and any
connecting flights will be counted as an additional ticket; or a
‘ticket’ could refer to the whole trip including connections.
o For question 4, please confirm your definition of ‘top 5 travellers’,
and whether this relates to the number of ‘tickets’ (as determined by
your definition above).

Please note that, in accordance with section 15(1AA) of the OIA, the
timeframe for making a decision on your request will reset to 20 working
days from the day after you provide clarification.

Kind regards

Government & Executive Services

Good to see that IRD's travel provider, Orbit, give data around kilometers travelled which enables carbon emission calculations. IRD's international air travel, for instance, of 657,194km produced around 139,700 kg CO2e, while their domestic air travel of 2,280,955km produced around 688,000 kg CO2e.

So IRD's air travel alone in the 2018/2019 financial year produced some 827 tons of CO2.

Also good that IRD/Orbit have enacted a carbon emissions reduction programme.
