Dear Mark,

Thank you for your email of 22 July 2019 requesting a breakdown of the cause of all fatal road accidents in New Zealand since 2000 broken down per year.

I attach a table which provides the factors contributing to fatal crashes from 2000 to 2018, noting however that data for 2018 is provisional.

Loss of control of vehicle, alcohol and/or drugs, travelling too fast for conditions, and failed to keep left are the leading contributing factors recorded for fatal crashes.

Please note that each crash can have more than one contributing factor assigned and therefore adding the individual percentages together will come to greater than 100 percent.

Yours sincerely,

Dan Jenkins

Dear Dan Jenkins,

Thanks this is very useful.

Can you please provide a breakdown if available of the causes which fall under distracted driver deaths, such as use of mobiles phones etc.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Wilson
