Hi Robert,

I'm Minister Borrows advisor, and he's asked me to help anyone interested in applying to be his Youth MP.

I'm travelling with the Minister today, and on leave tomorrow, so I'll get back to you with answers to your questions on Monday.

Is this the email address you'd like me to use? If not, if you give me your own email I'll send the information there.

Many thanks,

[personal info]

Hi Robert,

Here's a little more information on the Youth Parliament for you.

Some basic information is available on the Ministry of Youth Development
website:
[1]http://www.myd.govt.nz/young-people/yout...

Selection criteria:

·         Youth Parliament is open to young people aged 16 to 18 years
(inclusive);

·         You will obviously need to be free to travel to Wellington for
the Youth Parliament itself on 16 and 17 July;

·         Beyond that it’s basically over to each individual MP to select
their Youth MP on whatever criteria they see fit.

For Minister Borrows, he’s looking for a young person from the Whanganui
electorate who is passionate about their community – whether that’s their
local community, their region, or New Zealand as a whole.  What he has
asked for from anyone looking to be his youth MP is a short essay (500-600
words) on an issue they feel strongly about.  This could be a new law they
would like to introduce, a bad law they would like to repeal, or a current
policy, idea or decision they debate.  It is important to show an
understanding of both sides of the debate and propose a course through
that dilemma.

These essays need to be in to the Minister
([2][email address]) by 4pm on Thursday 28 March.

In terms of what the role entails, the link above gives a good overview.
You’ll likely spend some time with the Minister in his electorate, get to
see a sample of what electorate MPs get up to.  You’ll also get the full
Parliamentary experience down in Wellington – speaking in the debating
chamber, a select committee enquiry, voting on mock bills etc.  I
understand they also have some further activity planned outside the two
Wellington days, which is new since I was a youth MP in 2004, so I don’t
know as much about that.

Does that give you the information you needed?  Is there anything else I
can help you with?

Many thanks,

Dear [personal info] [personal info],

This from Michelle White <[email address]>

to me

Hi Robert

All Members of Parliament (MPs) are responsible for selecting one Youth MP to represent them at Youth Parliament 2013. As such, there are a variety of selection processes undertaken by MPs .

The Ministry of Youth Development assists MPs by providing some guidelines around the criteria for Youth MPs to ensure some level of consistency. Because each MP is responsible for selecting their Youth MP, it is at their discretion whether to use these criteria. One criteria is that Youth MPs are aged between 16 and 18 years (inclusive). It is clear that the MPs you have contacted have made the decision to use this criteria.

It is important to understand that meeting the criteria that each MP sets for their Youth MP does not guarantee a place in Youth Parliament. Meeting the criteria allows a young person to be included in that MPs selection process. It is likely that MPs will receive applications from a number of young people interested in participating in Youth Parliament. They will then undertake a process for selecting their chosen candidate to represent them as their Youth MP at Youth Parliament.

There is the opportunity for ten young people aged between 16 and 24 years (inclusive) to apply to become part of the Youth Press Gallery. Similar to the Youth MP opportunity, meeting the criteria for Youth Press Gallery members does not guarantee a position, but allows a young person to be included in the selection process. We anticipate a number of applications from young people which will be considered for the ten Youth Press Gallery positions available. You are welcome to consider this opportunity.

We trust this answers your questions regarding Youth Parliament criteria and selection process. It is great that you are interested in Youth Parliament and once again you are welcome to consider the Youth Press Gallery opportunity. Please note the closing date for applications to be received is 5 April 2013.

Regards

Michelle (on behalf of the Youth Parliament team)
