Drowning of Visitors to New Zealand

G Christian made this Official Information request to Sport and Recreation New Zealand

Sport and Recreation New Zealand did not have the information requested.

From: G Christian

Dear Sport and Recreation New Zealand,

As New Zealand is about to have approx 100,000 visitors enter its borders, can you please outline for me the information that has been considered and the actions that have been undertaken to inform these visitors of the very real dangers that present themselves at West Coast beaches, and many East Coast beaches. Namely the many lethal rips and undertows and the Surf Life Saving protocols associated with those dangers, should a visitor swimming in New Zealand waters find themselves in difficulty.

I draw your attention to this as I have just saved a British visitor from drowning at an East Coast beach and they had no idea whatsoever that they should have raised their hand to indicate to the shore that they were in grave danger. Some 15 mins later another 34yo female British swimmer on the same beach drowned.

Yours faithfully,

Guy Hollister

Dear Sport and Recreation New Zealand,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Sport and Recreation New Zealand's handling of my FOI request 'Drowning of Visitors to New Zealand'.

How can a response to an OIA request take more than a year ?

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address:

Yours faithfully,

Guy Hollister
