CHEMICAL SPRAYING - Rakaia and Styx Rivers

Graham Carter made this Official Information request to Canterbury Regional Council

The request was successful.

From: Graham Carter

Dear Canterbury Regional Council,
CHEMICAL SPRAYING

Dear Sir

Can you please advise the exact names of the chemicals used to spray on the foliage around waterways and the application rate of each?

Can you please advise what signage is put up when the areas are being sprayed?

Can you please advise what water testing is carried out after an application of spraying has been undertaken? Are the surfactants tested?

What form of triclopyr is used?

Is polyethoxylated tallowamine, or POEA, an ingredient in chemicals present in any of the chemicals?

Can you also provide the exact timings of the spraying as native fish and salmon smolt are moving up and down the rivers they often don't use the main braids and therefore could very susceptible to the sprays and residue.

Can you access the results of the water quality testing? What happens if the weeds don't get sprayed? Is there an alternative method to kill the weeds?

What method of delivering the chemicals is used?

Yours faithfully,

Graham Carter

Dear Graham

We are currently working on your LGOIMA request for information about the
spraying of chemicals around waterways.

Can I please seek your clarification regarding the following question. You
ask: “What method of delivering the chemicals is used?”

Do you want to know how the chemical is applied, or how the chemical is
delivered to the site for application, or something else?

Also, our river engineering team maintain only a small portion of the Styx
River, downstream of the floodgates (where it enters the Waimakariri River
under the stopbank). Are you interested in knowing about spraying upstream
of the Styx floodgates? If so, we will transfer part of your request to
the Christchurch City Council for their attention.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards

Anna
