Incomplete tracking record for 1080 baits used in 2017 in Coromandel

Wendy Pond made this Official Information request to Department of Conservation

The request was successful.

From: Wendy Pond

Dear Department of Conservation,
I am seeking a complete record for the distribution of 1080 poison baits brought into the Coromandel peninsula in 2017. Please state what locations and organisations received 1080 poison baits, on what dates, and what quantity of baits was used on each occasion.

Previous replies by you have not provided this information in a comprehensible form.

Note: On 8 February you provided a tracking record for the period 13 June 2017 to 19 October 2017. This record leaves 2400 kg unaccounted for.

On 13 March you provided a tracking record for the period 8 June 2017 to 29 October 2017. This record leaves 600 kg unaccounted for. By 13 March you must have known what happened to the 600 kg, and what happened to 1080 poison baits left over: were they returned or buried?

The information you have previously provided is so partial and so redacted, and the responses so delayed, that I have not yet been able to form a total picture of where 1080 toxin was stored, what organisations it was distributed to, where it was used, and in what quantities.

Is the use of 1080 poison in our communities and in our environments a secret project?

Please provide a comprehensive account in a form that the public can understand.

Yours faithfully,

Wendy Pond
