Pregnancy and Parenting Education and Information Programme for Teen Parents

Cinnamon Whitlock made this Official Information request to David Clark

The request was partially successful.

From: Cinnamon Whitlock

Tena koe Minister David Clark,

I am writing to ask why the Ministry of Health has failed to provide teen parent centred antenatal classes (pregnancy and parenting education and information) to young pregnant teens within the Waitemata DHB area.

Over the last 2 years, I have seen a steady rise of teen parent mums and dads who have been involved with Oranga Tamariki declare and say that they had not attended antenatal classes. A key rationale behind this, is that no specific teen parent centred ante-natal programme is offered. The lack of accountability from MOH and WDHB has shown a delay in registering with a PHO or GP service, a lack of understanding on the changes of pregnancy upon the teen mum and the pepi.

Can you please provide information regarding the number of teen parents who have registered with a GP
How many teen parents have been offered and accepted or declined an antenatal course.
What funding has been allocated to delivering to teen parents antenatal courses with WDHB from 205-2017?
What are the outcomes and feedback provided by teen parents upon completion of the antenatal course?
