Recruitment of Sworn Police officers

Sam made this Official Information request to Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

The request was successful.

From: Sam

Dear Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet,

I do volunteer with Community patrols New Zealand which is run along with New Zealand police. It is considered as a pathway to join NZ police. I have the physical fitness and all other requirements fulfilled except my visa because of which I am not able to become police officer. What’s the need to call sworn officers from outside when you have people who are ready to join NZ Police who are living over here in New Zealand.

Yours faithfully,
Sam

From: MCMAHON, Teresa

Dear Sam

Thank you for your correspondence transferred to NZ Police from the Prime
Minister’s office. You seem to be concerned about the visa requirements
for applying to become a New Zealand police officer.  The NZ Police
website states that to apply to become a police officer in New Zealand you
need to:

o Be at least 17 years old (must be 18 before you can start at police
college).
o Hold a full NZ driver licence.
o Be a New Zealand or Australian Citizen or NZ Permanent Resident.
o Be available to attend constabulary recruitment assessments in person.
o Be [1]physically fit and in [2]excellent health.
o Notify constabulary recruitment staff of any previous criminal or
traffic convictions (including warnings, court appearances, and
diversions).
o Provide police clearance for any country (other than NZ) that you have
worked or resided in for longer than three months.

If you could set out the specific issues about NZ Police recruitment that
are of concern to you, Police will respond further.

Yours sincerely
