Direct reports, span of control

Mike Patrick made this Official Information request to Public Service Commission

The request was successful.

From: Mike Patrick

Dear State Services Commission,

Can you please tell me firstly how many direct reports the CE of the SSC has and secondly how many direct reports each of the CES in the state sector have.

Finally can you provide me a copy of any formal advice or informal suggestions that SSC provides to CES in the state sector about what is a sensible and appropriate number of direct reports for a CE to have.

Yours faithfully,

Mike Patrick

Dear Mr Patrick,

I am writing concerning your Official Information request we received on
xx October 2017 to seek clarification of the information you are seeking.

Part of your request you have asked  “how many direct reports each of the
CEs in the State Sector have?”

The State Services Commission does not hold this information for each
agency,  so we will be transferring this request to each individual agency
for their own consideration.

The attached link provides a list of all the organisations that are part
of the State Sector:  [1]http://ssc.govt.nz/State_sector_organisa...

The list is quite substantive so we are seeking clarification from you as
to which of the organisations you are specifically wanting this
information about.

Look forward to your response.

Kind regards

Dear Ministerial Services [SSC],

Thank you for your response seeking clarification on which Chief Executies I would like to see the numbers of direct reports for. Because I am interested in seeing how well aligned the state sector as a whole is to best practice management theory around spans of control etc I would like to see all of the numbers across the state sector. But, as I appreciate that if you do not hold this information then it becomes a difficult and unweildy request to administer, I am happy to just receive information covering the CEs of the public service departments, the four non public service departments and the Crown Agents excluding DHBs.

Thank you for your reply and I look forward to hearing from you on the other parts of my request including any advice on direct reports to CEs provided by SSC and from other agencies on this part of my request

Yours sincerely,

Mike Patrick

Dear Mr Patrick,

Thank you for providing us with clarification.

Following receipt of your response clarifying who you were seeking the information from, rather than formally transferring your request to each agency, SSC has decided to co-ordinate the response. We will be seeking the information directly from the agencies and will then provide you with one response to your OIA request.

We will endeavour to respond to your request as soon as possible and in any event no later than are 20 working days after the day your clarification was received. If we are unable to respond to your request by then, we will notify you of an extension of that timeframe.

If you have any queries, please feel free to contact Ministerial Services at [email address]. If any additional factors come to light which are relevant to your request, please do not hesitate to contact us so that these can be taken into account.

Kind regards

Ministerial Services
