Map of Significant Natural Areas and proposed SNAs

David Maxwell made this Official Information request to New Plymouth District Council

The request was successful.

From: David Maxwell

Dear New Plymouth District Council,

Could you supply a shapefile (for GIS analysis) of the location and polygon areas of all current Significant Natural Areas (SNAs) and proposed SNAs in the NPDC territorial boundary.
Information about the composition of habitat of those SNAs would be useful also.

Yours faithfully,
David Maxwell

The Council has received your official information request to  supply a
shapefile (for GIS analysis) of the location and polygon areas of all
current Significant Natural Areas (SNAs) and proposed SNAs in the NPDC
territorial boundary and information about the composition of habitat of
those SNAs.

The Council currently does not have any proposed SNAs.  There is a GIS
public viewer which shows the location of the likely SNAs (LSNAs).  The
link to the LSNA viewer is available on the Council’s website:

Could you please clarify that your request in relation to the composition
of habitat relates only to the 32 SNA which are listed in Schedule 21 the
operative District Plan.

Kind regards

Denise Young

In response to your official information request please find attached the
shape files of the Likely Significant Natural Areas (LSNA) layer. These
areas have not been confirmed via field-checks and are still in draft and
therefore have no legal effect. The Council is working with landowners and
has employed Wildlands ecologists to undertake field checks where
landowners are uncertain of the values, or where the area includes pasture
or pine trees, which clearly don’t meet the significance criteria listed
in the Draft District Plan policy IB-P1.

The imagery used in the LSNA maps is from the Taranaki Regional Council.
If you are using ArcGIS then you should be able to add the Imagery
Service from the Taranaki Regional Council REST end point.
