Costs of General Election

Tom Andrews made this Official Information request to Electoral Commission

The request was successful.

From: Tom Andrews

Dear Electoral Commission,

Could you please provide a breakdown of the direct costs making up the total cost of each of the past 4 General Elections?

If at all possible I would like the breakdown to include polling station related costs and postal costs as separate values.

Yours faithfully,

Tom A.

Dear Tom

I am in the process of collating the information you have requested and it
would assist if you can please clarify the following:

·         Whether you require a breakdown between the cost of Returning
Officer HQs and voting places. The Commission’s reporting has property
information costs for the last four general elections, which consist of
the lease costs of Returning Officers headquarters together with polling
places.  HQs are often used as advance voting places in the run up to an
election.

·         The type of postal costs you would like.  Parliamentary
elections are not conducted by post in New Zealand but there are some
associated postal costs, which are reported with freight, courier and
stationery costs.  Please note, the Electoral Commission sends out
EasyVote packs to all registered electors prior to each election with
information about candidates, parties and voting places.  An enrolment
update campaign is also run prior to every general election and every
local body election, which also involves a mail out to all registered
electors.  Can you please confirm what breakdown you require of all or any
of these costs.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

From: Tom Andrews

Hey Natalie,

Thank you for your prompt response!

To clarify:

I do not need the HQs and voting places to be reported separately.

The postal costs I would like broken down are the postal and stationery costs of the EasyVote packs, as well as any enrolment update campaign postal and stationery costs. A total for each of these by region with the number of electors in each region would be great, but if it's too much hassle (or unavailable by region) then a total is fine.

Also, if I could have the postal ballot stationery and postage costs for the local body elections as well that would be great!

Thanks a bunch!

Yours sincerely,

Tom Andrews
