Animal Welfare

Gary Stephenson made this Official Information request to Minister for Primary Industries

The request was partially successful.

From: Gary Stephenson

Dear Minister for Primary Industries,

Given that over the past 5 years MPI has provided funding to Landcare Research to the tune of $815,000 for Rabbit pest control methods that kill using RHDV and poisoned baits, and has allocated a further $240,000 in funding taking the total to in excess of $1,000,000.

Given that MPI has stated that it is looking very closely at what is happening in Australia with RHDV, and can quite clearly see now that both the Australian Veterinary Association and The Royal Australian SPCA question the validity of the results of the original testing conducted to examine the efficacy of Cylap vaccine against RHDV1a-K5 and now state it is UNPROVEN. Plus their added concern about the risks of the off-label use. The Australian Department of Industry and Science, the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre has also ecommended that a new vaccine be developed for multiple strains of the virus that causes rabbit haemorrhagic disease (including the new virus known as RHDV2).
Why has not the Animal Welfare branch of MPI raised concern to the Minister or the minister raised concersn regarding the questions being raised around the efficacy of the Cylap Vaccine aginst RHDV1a-K5 and funded research into proper vaccines to protect pet rabbits.

Yours faithfully,

Gary Stephenson
