Total number of beds in regional forensic mental health services
JustSpeak made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health
The request was successful.
From: JustSpeak
Dear Ministry of Health,
I am writing to request information on the total number of beds in inpatient facilities in the regional forensic mental health services.
In the 2005 census of forensic mental health services, the Ministry of Health indicated there were a total of 221 secure beds in forensic units across the country:
- 84 beds in Auckland
- 40 beds in Hamilton
- 10 beds in Whanganui
- 40 beds in Wellington
- 34 beds in Christchurch
- 13 beds in Dunedin
In addition, the report noted an extra 15 'step-down' beds in Hauora Waikato, for patients being transfered out of secure care.
I would like to know whether these figures are still accurate - has the number of beds changed, and if so, what is the current number of beds? If there has been a change, please indicate at which facilities the numbers increased/decreased, and by how much.
Yours faithfully,
Megan Rae
