Prisoner newsletters in New Zealand prisons

Sophie Morgan made this Official Information request to Department of Corrections

The request was refused by Department of Corrections.

From: Sophie Morgan

Dear Department of Corrections,

I am interested in the avenues for collective communication available to and created by people incarcerated in New Zealand prisons. I have the following questions:

Are people incarcerated in New Zealand prisons able to create and circulate their own newsletters through their respective facilities?

Is the Department of Corrections aware of any newsletters currently circulating in any correctional facilities in New Zealand?

If the answer to the above is affirmative, please provide the names of those newsletters and their respective facilities.

Again, if the answer to the second question is affirmative: is it possible for non-incarcerated people to communicate with inmates by way of those newsletters?

If the answer to the above is affirmative, how can this be done?

Yours faithfully,

Sophie Morgan
