Copy of photo from Operation Tam

Gemma Claire made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Gemma Claire

Dear New Zealand Police

I hereby request a copy of the Mina Cornelia photo from Operation Tam. This photo shows Scott Watson with a group of people on the Mina Cornelia. Bridgette Radford took it. According to emails (April and May 1999) between Detective John Rae and Stefan Zajkowski, the photo was taken on a Pentax ESPIO 738, on film that was probably 100 speed. In those emails, Mr Zajkowski advises that the negatives were given to the police. I would like a copy of the photo from the negative.

Please respond to my request through the FYI system. Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Gemma Claire

You do not need to provide a postal address. If you have requested information in electronic format, then an agency must provide it in that format.

Just backing up what Alex said.

If you want, cite s16(2) of the Official Information Act: "..the department or Minister of the Crown or organisation shall make the information available in the way preferred by the person requesting it" (with few exceptions).

It would be difficult to argue posting a letter impairs "efficient administration" compared to email.

Thanks Alex and Oliver. As I am requesting a photo, I would prefer to get it by post, as scanning might reduce the quality (depending on the quality of the scanner). However, before I respond to the police, I want to check it is OK to give my postal address, as I wouldn't want to undermine the processes of FYI website in any way. Thank you.

Gemma, sorry for the delay. This is your OIA request so it is up to you if you would prefer to receive a postal response.

We encourage responses by email so that the public can see the information, but the decision is yours.

Dear GOODSON, Lisa,

Thank you for posting me information, as per our correspondence through the FYI site and via my personal email address.

Unfortunately, the information I received is not what I requested. What I asked for was "a copy of the
photo from the negative." What I have received is a photo blown up and printed on A4 paper.

Could you please print a photo straight from the negative (like photos people have in photo albums - size 4" x 6") and post this to me? Thank you very much for your assistance.

Yours sincerely,

Gemma Claire

Hi Gemma

Just to give you an update as to where we are at with your Official Information Request.

The negative you have requested has been located, this negative will need to be sent to Christchurch to be processed. This process may incur a cost for you, at this point I have not been advised what that cost will be.

My question to you is do you wish to continue with the request, and incur the cost of the processing of the negative. When you decide what you wish to do I will inform the holder of the file.

Yours sincerely
