Statistics of Mental Illness Related Callouts in Otago and Southland

Scout Barbour-Evans made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was successful.

From: Scout Barbour-Evans

Dear New Zealand Police,

I reside in New Zealand and am making this request in accordance with s12(1) of the Official Information Act.

I am looking for statistics on mental illness related callouts by Otago and Southland Police in 2015.

This covers members of the community who are in treatment for psychiatric and psychological illness, privately or through the Southern District Health Board.

This also covers the outcome of these callouts, aka whether these members of the community were brought to their local emergency psychiatric team, or whether they were detained in a cell to wait for treatment.

If 2015 records are not yet available, your most recent recorded statistics on this would be appreciated instead.

Yours faithfully,
Scout River Barbour-Evans

Dear New Zealand Police,

It would seem you have misunderstood my OIA request, which was for statistics on mental illness related callouts in Otago and Southland, and not for information about how to submit an OIA request.

If you could please answer my original question, I would be very grateful.

Yours faithfully,

Scout Barbour-Evans

From: Scout Barbour-Evans

Dear New Zealand Police,

Good afternoon. Under the Official Information Act 1982, I have submitted this request according to all legal protocol. I have been advised that it is now your responsibility to find this information internally from the relevant districts, as you have done for other OIA requests. This OIA request is completely valid under New Zealand law and it is your responsibility to respond with what information you have before February 15th, 2016.

My original request still stands: Can you please send me statistics on:
1. How many mental illness related police callouts were there in Otago and Southland in 2015
1a. (If you don't have statistics for 2015, your most recent statistics will be sufficient)
2. Out of these callouts, how many people were taken straight to their local hospital, and how many were taken to a police cell?

Yours faithfully,

Scout Barbour-Evans
