Under the Official Information Act 1982, I request statistics on pending
onshore refugee and protection claims handled by the Refugee Status Unit
(RSU).

As at 28 February 2026, please provide:

The total number of cases within New Zealand that have formally lodged an
application for refugee or protected person status and for which, as at
that date, the RSU had not yet made a first-instance decision.
 
We will endeavour to respond to your request as soon as possible, and no
later than 7/04/2026, being 20 working days after the day your request
was received. If we are unable to respond to your request by then, we will
notify you of an extension of that timeframe. If you have any enquiries
regarding your request feel free to contact us via email to
