On behalf of the Remuneration Authority (the Authority), I am responding
to your email of 2 September 2025 which requests, under the Official
Information Act 1982 (OIA), information on “what amount of money can
Ministers and members of Parliament and accompanying staff spend on meals,
accommodation, flights and other items when travelling domestically and
international? Is there a cap on how much they can spend on each per night
or per 24-hour period?”

Under section 17 of the Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Services)
Act 2013, the Authority has the responsibility for determining the
entitlements of members of Parliament (MPs) and Ministers to all
accommodation services within New Zealand.  Accordingly, I have attached
to this response the Authority’s Members of Parliament (Accommodation
Services for Members and Travel Services for Family Members) Determination
2023.  This determination sets out the accommodation services that can be
provided within New Zealand to MPs and Ministers and specifies the maximum
amount that can be spent per day and per annum on MPs and Ministers’
accommodation.

The Authority is not responsible for determining Ministers, MPs and
accompanying staff expenditure on meals, international accommodation,
flights and other items when travelling domestically and international. 
The agencies best placed to provide you with this information are the:

·         Department of Internal Affairs – for information on Ministers
and their accompanying staff; and

·         Parliamentary Service – for information on MPs and their
accompanying staff.
