Street Signs Color Coding

W SHIH made this Official Information request to Auckland Council

The request was successful.

From: W SHIH

Dear Auckland Council,

I have noticed street signs around Central Auckland have either blue or green as the background colour of the street signs.

I would like to information held by the Auckland Council on the following:
- Any reasoning behind the different colouring of the street signs.
- If a new street is created what would the colour of the new street sign be?

Yours faithfully,
W Shih

Dear Sir/Madam,

Subject:                               Central Auckland – Signage Enquiry

Thank you for contacting Auckland Transport regarding the format of street
signs in central Auckland. We are grateful for your patience while we have
been investigating your concerns and preparing a response for you.

The white letters on the blue background was the street sign format for
Auckland City Council. Following amalgamation of the seven local
authorities in November 2010 new formats needed to be applied to achieve a
region-wide consistency. As other local authorities had a white letter on
green background it was decided to use this format.

In the old Auckland City area (on the isthmus) existing street name signs
remain until such time as they become dilapidated and need renewing or
some other reason for change, then at that time they are renewed to the
new format.

There is no plan to replace existing signs with new signs unnecessarily.

We trust the above addresses the issues you have raised and appreciate you
taking the time to bring this matter to our attention.

Kind regards,
