From: Sarah Zhang
Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,
Hope this email finds you well.
I checked the immigraticon website, you have released the updated the parent resident visa overview and approval information.
Based on the latest version, I noticed only 32 visas were approved this calendar year (Jan 25 - May 25). By comparing with last year (over 2700 visas approved), it was way too less.
May I know the reasons for it?
Thanks for your time and look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Sarah Zhang

Your query has been referred to our team which we will respond to as

The Parent Resident Visa allows New Zealand citizens and residents to
sponsor their parents for residence—supporting family reunification and
skilled migration. Each financial year (June – July), a total of 2,500
visas can be issued under the Parent Resident Visa category. The quota cap
resets on 1 July each year.
A one-off increase in the Parent Category quota was implemented during the
2024/25 financial year, to enable applications that have been approved in
principle to be issued this financial year.
More information on the one-off increase can be found here: [1]Parent
Resident Visa category update :: Immigration New Zealand
Please note that table 8 on the website shows the number of applications
approved, an application can contain two applicants.
We hope you find this information helpful. If the information provided is
not sufficient, or if you have any further questions, feel free to submit
a new request via our online form -
