Maternity care, BMI and Masterton hospital
Tom Broadhead made this Official Information request to Hutt District Health Board
The request was successful.
From: Tom Broadhead
Dear Hutt District Health Board,
I am investigating whether Masterton Hospital has recently adopted a policy where they will not accept pregnant women who are over a certain BMI due to the increased risks they may present.
Under the Official Information Act 1982 I am requesting the following information:
· Any formal or draft policy from the last two years relating to the acceptance of maternity patients at Masterton Hospital.
· Any formal or draft policy from the last two years relating to risk assessment of patients who require anaesthetic, either general or local, either in relation to birth or any other medical procedure.
· Any papers, minutes, notes, memo or other such records from the last two years relating to Hutt Valley District Health Board meetings, or sub group or sub committee meetings, which discuss when maternity patients or patients requiring anaesthetic should be accepted at Masterton Hospital and when they should be referred to either Hutt Hospital or another hospital.
· Any record of any analysis undertaken (including medical, ethical and cost/benefit analysis or any other kind of analysis) to inform decisions relating to when maternity patients or patients requiring anaesthetic should be accepted at Masterton Hospital and when they should be referred to either Hutt Hospital or another hospital.
· All emails from or to Christopher Smith at Masterton Hospital relating to when maternity patients or patients requiring anaesthetic should be accepted at Masterton Hospital and when they should be referred to either Hutt Hospital or another hospital or the policy relating to acceptance of pregnant women with a certain BMI
Yours faithfully,
Tom Broadhead

Good morning
I am a little unsure as to which DHB should respond to this. Wairarapa DHB is separate to Hutt Valley DHB, both having their own Chief Executives.
Although some of us do work over the 2 DHBs, and some 3 DHBs, each DHB is still an individual DHB.
Hutt Valley Board do not govern Wairarapa and visa versa.
Please can you clarify which DHB you want to answer, as each will have a completely different response, that is Hutt would say along the lines that they do not govern Wairarapa.
Thank you
Sandra

Dear Sandra Loveday [WairDHB],
Thanks for this quick response, it does seem like it should be directed to the Wairarapa DHB then. I think my confusing arose from googling wairarapa hospital which takes you to the Hutt DHB site.
Can you take this on as a request to the Wairarapa DHB?
Yours sincerely,
Tom Broadhead
