What thyroid medications and compounded Natural Desiccated Thyroid treatments are listed on the New Zealand doctors MIMS list?

Belinda Hodson made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

The request was partially successful.

From: Belinda Hodson

Dear Ministry of Health,

1. Which thyroid medications and compounded Natural Desiccated Thyroid hormone extracts e.g. Whole Thyroid Extract, Extended Release T3; are listed on the New Zealand MIMS list? Please provide an answer by product name e.g. Eltroxin. Note that when I say MIMS list I am referring to the list that doctors and other medical specialists use when they want to know what medicines are available that they can prescribe patients.

2. If compounded Natural Desiccated Thyroid hormone extracts are not listed on the MIMS list, why not?

3. When was the last time that a compounded Natural Desiccated Thyroid hormone extract was submitted by a company to be included on the MIMS list so it could be listed? Was this application accepted? And if not, on what grounds was it declined and which agency declined it? What information was used to decline the application and who was consulted? What patient input was included in the decision-making process in this instance?

4. What criteria would compounded Natural Desiccated Thyroid hormone extracts have to meet to qualify for listing?

Yours faithfully,
Belinda Hodson
