Digital Mental Health Strategy
Georgia made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Georgia to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Georgia
Dear Ministry of Health,
I am writing to inquire about the current status of the New Zealand Digital Mental Health Strategy. Health Report Number H2024037540 highlights technology as a key system in transforming our current mental health and wellbeing support system.
I am aware Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) (Improving Mental Health Outcomes) is currently being amended. In the most recent publicly accessible amendment bill for this act, a Digital Health Strategy is absent from the list of Health Strategies. Could you please advise whether creating a Digital Mental Health Strategy is included in Pae Ora?
I would appreciate any information you can provide regarding the government's forecast for creating a Digital Mental Health Strategy and any proposed ideas of what this may look like.
Yours faithfully,
Georgia

Kia ora Georgia
Thanks for the chat the other day and my apologies for the delay in coming
back to you. As per our discussion, answers to your questions below:
Q. Current status of the New Zealand Digital Mental Health Strategy?
A. There is no New Zealand Digital Mental Health Strategy, although the
strategic direction for digital mental health solutions is guided by Kia
Manawanui and the System and Services Framework (as outlined in this
previously released [1]document). In particular, Kia Manawanui has a
strong digital focus as a key enabler both in terms of service delivery
through digital means, but also as an enabler of information.
Q. Could you please advise whether creating a Digital Mental Health
Strategy is included in Pae Ora?
A. There is no requirement for a standalone Digital Mental Health Strategy
under the Pae Ora Act, but there are opportunities to include a digital
focus as part of the Mental Health & Wellbeing Pae Ora Strategy that is
currently under development (as per the Amendment Bill that was passed
late last year – more details on that [2]here). So you may want to keep an
eye on the Ministry of Health’s website for engagement opportunities
relating to the Strategy.
We also briefly discussed the work of the Digital Health Association. If
you would like to make contact with them then their website is:
[3]https://www.dha.org.nz/
I assume this fulfils your request for information, but if you need
anything further then please just let me know.
All the best with your studies.
