Misleading data regarding Road Cycling claims.

Ian Guy made this Official Information request to Accident Compensation Corporation

The request was successful.

From: Ian Guy

Dear Accident Compensation Corporation,

According to this press article

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/rotorua-daily...

It is stated that in the year 2023 there were 2706 ACC claims for 'road cycling' - this would suggest that every day at least 6 claims are made in relation to an accident involving a road cyclist; in comparison the article states there were 596 for mountain biking.

Please can you provide some detail as to how the figure of 2706 was calculated?

Is this based on entries as per the ACC claim forms?

How many of these were actually involving 'road cyclists' as opposed to say, children falling off a bicycle in a playground?

How many of these were as a result of a motor vehicle striking a road cyclist?

I feel the way the figures presented within the article may provide a grossly misleading perception of risk

Yours Sincerely

Ian Guy

From: Ian Guy

Dear Christopher,

Thank you for your attention to this and your detailed response, it is appreciated. It is evident, through no fault of ACC's, that the recording of accident data can lead to events perhaps being considered as a 'road cycling' event, when in actual fact, they could be markedly different (e.g. a child falling off at home). Indeed, as you point out, the additional description of the event is sometimes not completed, and this is not generally subjected to any form of analysis, so that data may provide more detail.

I think this provides an insight into how perfectly good data can be misrepresented, albeit unintentionally, by the media, in suggesting that road cycling is inherently more dangerous than say Mountain Biking.

I will share this information with cycling advocacy groups, because as a group, road cyclists neither want to be a burden on society, nor do we want to be seen by motorists as a problem.

Yours sincerely,

Ian Guy
