Diplomatic Appointments
Alan Riley made this Official Information request to Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Alan Riley to read a recent response and update the status.
From: Alan Riley
Dear Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade,
I would like to understand MFAT's processes associated with making diplomatic appointments, including (by way of example) Ambassadors, High Commissioners and Head of Mission.
I'd therefore like to request any policy, process, guidance or other documents held by MFAT that set out the process for appointing such positions.
Could I also please request a copy of diplomatic appointments made in the last twelve months and an understanding of the process for appointment.
Yours faithfully,
Alan Riley

Thank you very much.
Regarding your comment "All Head of Mission and Head of Post vacancies are advertised internally", can you clarify what "advertised internally" means?
Further, could you please confirm that there is no policy or guidance document setting out the process for diplomatic appointments?
Yours sincerely,
Alan Riley

Kia ora,
Thank you for your email below.
All of MFAT’s internal job vacancies are advertised on the Ministry
intranet for all staff to view.
The Foreign Affairs Act 1988 and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic
Relations 1961 are the key documents that guide the process for diplomatic
appointments.
