Compensating a Saudi Business man, Hamood Al Ali Al Khalaf,

Caroline Evans made this Official Information request to Minister of Trade

The authority would like to / has responded by post to this request.

From: Caroline Evans

Dear Minister of Trade, I would like information on the deal where our tax payers money was spent on compensating a Saudi Business man, Hamood Al Ali Al Khalaf, which also saw 900 sheep sent on Singapore Airlines to Saudi Arabia. I would like to see the reasoning that was given for gifting a Saudi businessman $6 million worth of farm equipment for his sheep breeding operation.“This money was paid to move an AgResearch partnership business from Hawke’s Bay to Saudi Arabia, and I would like information on how the decision to do this was made.

Yours faithfully,
Caroline Evans

I have also seen it alleged that the 50, 000 sheep and cattle that just left Timaru on board the Nada, also belong to this same Saudi guy. I would like to know more about that.

Response from MFAT:

Hi Oliver,

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately the documents requested are too big to upload to the website, and are packaged up in hardcopy form ready to be sent to the requestors physical address. Are you able to provide a contact number, email, or postal address for Caroline Evans and Alan Shaw?

Kind regards,

Alex

Hi Alex,

The FYI email addresses you already have are the addresses you should use for our requesters. It will be up to them to provide you alternative contact details.

With regards to OIA s16(2), the preferred response is electronic (either email or the upload URLs provided). If this is not possible, under s16(3) you need to provide the reason and supporting grounds. Our logs show you have not attempted email or upload so I wonder how you have decided it is "too big".

Regards,

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

The response is close to 1000 pages long. On the advice of our IT division, we have not attempted to scan it. We have spoken with the Office of the Ombudsman and advised them that despite our best efforts we are unable to get the responses to requestors electronically.

We will wait for a response from the requestors regarding alternative contact details. Alternatively, we are happy to send FYI.org the hardcopy documents for you to scan and upload yourself.

Regards,
Alex
