Partner of a New Zealander Resident Visa

Uma Tatikonda made this Official Information request to Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Uma Tatikonda to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Uma Tatikonda

Dear Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment,

I am writing to request information in accordance with the guidelines of the Official Information Act 1982. Specifically, I would like to receive the following details:

1. Your website states that the processing time for a Partner of a New Zealander Resident Visa is 9 months. I am seeking clarification on whether this entire duration is necessary for processing and whether any delays are due to procedural or resource-related factors.
2. While a visitor visa takes 3 weeks and a work visa takes 5 weeks, a resident visa takes 9 months. I would appreciate an explanation for this significant difference in processing times.
3. Could you kindly share the guidelines for approving a residence under the partnership category?
4. I am interested in understanding why INZ does not provide an interim visa for a Partner of a New Zealander Resident Visa, especially in comparison to the interim visas issued for temporary visitor and work visas.
5. It would be helpful to receive information on the number of partnership residence visas currently in the system, as well as the monthly approval numbers.
6. Lastly, could you provide the average waiting time for a residence visa application before it is assigned to a case officer?

I appreciate your attention to these matters and look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Uma Tatikonda

Dear Alex,

Thank you for your response.

I can wait for questions 5 and 6 so you can respond to the remaining questions.
Please indicate the time you require to respond to both 5 and 6.

My main concern is understanding the significant disparity between regular visa applications and residency applications. If prioritizing certain applications is a policy-driven choice, there should be an option for an interim visa for residency applications so that applicants don't have to apply for temporary visas solely to support INZ's decision. The additional temporary visa process is both time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, I kindly request that INZ reconsider this approach.

Yours sincerely,
Uma Tatikonda

Alex
