Hospital Admissions following Iron Infusion (Ferinject)

E M Grant made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

Response to this request is long overdue. By law Ministry of Health should have responded by now (details and exceptions). The requester can complain to the Ombudsman.

From: E M Grant

Dear Ministry of Health,

Could you please advise how many patients received a publicly funded "FerInject" iron infusion for each year between 2018 and 2022. Of those patients, please could you advise how many were admitted to hospital within the same year and what the reason for their admission was.

If this request is too broad, please provide information on the number of patients who following iron infusion were admitted with low phosphate (hypophosphotamia), seizure, breathing difficulties or heart issues - even where the connection to the earlier iron infusion was not made.

I am happy to provide my NIH number via phone or email so that my record can be viewed as a reference. I received an infusion, was not monitored per MedSafe guidelines for lowered phosphate and was soon thereafter hospitalised with a seizure and heart problems.

Yours faithfully,

E M Grant

Kia ora koutou,

I am emailing to revise your current request which was transferred to Te
Whatu Ora on 16 October 2023. Your request was for the following
information made under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):

Could you please advise how many patients received a publicly funded
"FerInject" iron infusion for each year between 2018 and 2022. Of those
patients, please could you advise how many were admitted to hospital
within the same year and what the reason for their admission was.
If this request is too broad, please provide information on the number of
patients who following iron infusion were admitted with low phosphate
(hypophosphotamia), seizure, breathing difficulties or heart issues - even
where the connection to the earlier iron infusion was not made.
I am happy to provide my NIH number via phone or email so that my record
can be viewed as a reference. I received an infusion, was not monitored
per MedSafe guidelines for lowered phosphate and was soon thereafter
hospitalised with a seizure and heart problems.

As it is currently worded, your request would require a significant amount
of collation and consultation. In order to provide you with this
information, Te Whatu Ora staff would have to manually review individual
search fields.

We can however provide you information by searching the code: 96199-19
[1920] Intravenous administration of pharmacological agent, other and
unspecified pharmacological agent.

Please note this would include other drugs besides iron infusions such as
FerInject so would differ from your original request.

You are under no obligation to amend your request, but requests that
require substantial collation may be refused under section 18(f) of the
Act. We want to work with you to avoid this and ensure we are able to
provide a response that best meets your needs.

Please let us know before close of business 20 October 2023 whether you
are prepared to amend or clarify your request and, if so, how.

Please also note, under section 15 of the Official Information Act 1982,
any clarification or amendments made to a request within seven days after
the date it is received, that request may be treated as a new request and
the time limit for the response restarts.

We look forward to receiving your response.

Ngā mihi nui

Dear hnzOIA,

Thank you for your response. I am happy for you to provide the information with the amendment you suggest - namely that you will provide details of patients who have received the intravenous administration of a pharmacological agent [96199-19 [1920] Intravenous administration of pharmacological agent, other and unspecified pharmacological agent.] and who have subsequently been hospitalised.

All other aspects of the original request remain.

Yours sincerely,

E M Grant

Dear hnzOIA,

The amendment suggested would not yield helpful information. I am happy to withdraw the request on the basis that it is too complex to obtain the information.

Yours sincerely,
