Law 458 Course Change

Molly Cooper made this Official Information request to University of Auckland

The request was successful.

From: Molly Cooper

Dear University of Auckland,

I am writing to request information regarding next year's change for the Elective Law 458 (Legal Ethics).
I have seen on the course outline that a note informs us it will no longer be taught and will instead change to a 300-level paper called Law 398(?).

Could you please inform me of what this will entail, specifically:
Will it become a required 300-level paper (as 301, 306, and 316 are)?
What will happen to those who have previously taken Law 458 but have not graduated yet?
Will another elective be offered in place of removing this elective?
Will it change to a full-year paper or continue to be a singular semester-long paper?

Any other information about the change would be greatly appreciated.

Yours faithfully,
Molly Cooper

Dear Landon Watt,

Thanks for your reply and attachment of the email. Unfortunately, the company has removed this email address from the website. If you could reattach said email, that would be great.
Regarding emailing about this subject, I have already emailed Law Student Support via the email given on the university's website. I was directed to student hubs, who unfortunately could not help with my request. Asking here has been a last resort to available information channels I have already attempted.
However, I am willing to use that avenue if it is a different email. I am just informing you of avenues that have already been taken.

Yours sincerely,
Molly Cooper

Just thought I'd add the email here with the information that was given to me:
Will it become a required 300-level paper (as 301, 306, and 316 are)?
LAW 398 will not be a required course for the LLB degree like LAW 301, LAW 306 or LAW 316. However, it will be a required course for CLE the same way LAW 458 is.

What will happen to those who have previously taken Law 458 but have not graduated yet?
Nothing will happen to them. CLE will still recognise it as a qualifying course and the student’s transcript will recognise the 10 points of LAW 456 towards the LLB degree.

Will there be another elective offered in place of the removal of this elective?
LAW 456 will be replaced by LAW 398 in 2025 not in 2024. The note saying LAW 398 will replace LAW 458 in 2024 has been removed from the LAW 458 DCO. This is to reflect changes to university timelines on course changes.

Will it change to a full-year paper or continue to be a singular semester-long paper?
LAW 398 will be a one-semester 15-point course

Molly
