Native School Attendance (1800s-2000s)

Henry Tan made this Official Information request to Ministry of Māori Development

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Henry Tan to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Henry Tan

Dear Ministry of Māori Development,

I am a researcher investigating whether there are traces of evidence for a "stolen generation" within the Māori population, as there was with the Aboriginal Australians and the First Nations of Canada.

Of importance is the Native School system emerging in the late 19th century. I would like to know:

1. Formal orders, if any, given to government personnel, public officials etc. for assimilation policies/strategies for the purpose of integrating Māori population with western culture (in particular, against children or youths).
2. Formal orders, if any, given to education authorities, teachers etc. alongside the Native School codes for persuading, enticing, coercing, or enforcing attendance of Māori children at these native schools.
3. Any notable records of actions of teachers or officials alike (can have names omitted) engaging in unethical behaviour prejudiced against Māori children within these Native Schools (such as for speaking te reo Māori instead of English).

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Henry Tan
