On behalf of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment I
acknowledge your email of 14^th December 2022 requesting under the
Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), the following:

 

“NZBN Trading names that include "Limited"

 

You are providing a service called NZBN, New Zealand Business Number.

There is an option for companies to also register a name that they are
"trading as".

This information is also available on company records online at the
Companies Office Many of those "trading as" names include the word
"Limited".

 

As an example when I searched NZBN for "Spark" which returned 995
records.I didnt venture past the first page of these results and noted:

Many companies use their full legal name as their trading as name. I would
consider that they do not have a trading as name, they merely represent
themselves as their full legal name.

I also see many companies drop the Limited from their name to reach a
trading as name.

I also see at least one example where the "trading as" name includes the
term limited, but the name is not the same as the company name at the
Companies Office.

One such random example is "Sparklewhite Teeth (CHCH) Limited" who trades
as "SparklewhiteTeeth CHCH Limited" without the brackets. There is no such
company listed at the companies office which is supposed to be a full
register of names that include the term limited.

 

Please will you supply me with an extract from the full NZBN Register of
businesses that are limited liability companies, who have as their trading
name a name which includes the word "limited". Please do not include those
Companies where the trading as name is the same as the full legal name.

 

That appears to be a very simple piece of SQL to write.”

 

Please note that days between 25 December 2022 to 15 January 2023
(inclusive) are defined as non- working days in the Act and are not
counted in the calculation for the response due date. This will affect the
time period for responding to your request.

 

Your request is being processed in accordance with the Act and a response
will be sent to you in due course.
