Police officers in districts

Ross Leitch made this Official Information request to New Zealand Police

The request was refused by New Zealand Police.

From: Ross Leitch

Dear New Zealand Police,

I would like to obtain the records of every New Zealand Police officer. Their name their photo and their identification number. I believe it is every citizens right to know who is policing their streets and this is an important factor in that. I am a current and always have been a New Zealand citizen and one of the worst things I have heard is of Police mistreating individuals without any punitive measures ever being taken.

Yours faithfully,
Ross Leitch

Good luck with that, this should be a very short and sharp no. Do you also want their home address and favorite colour?

More importantly: will be refused administratively as requiring substantial collation and research. A narrower request would likely be refused for privacy unless there was a counterveilling public interest.

A better approach would be to request abstract statistical data. This might be difficult if they still keep their records in hardcopy (substantial collation and research again), but it might be worth askign what statistical information they hold, and what information is held in searchable databases.
