Rural Origins sub- category boundaries for entry into MB ChB 2023
H Caughley made this Official Information request to University of Otago
The request was successful.
From: H Caughley
Dear University of Otago,
Could you please confirm whether North Loburn School, 813 Loburn Whiterock Road, North Loburn, 7472, is within your 2022 rural boundaries (as per your eVision portal criteria), and therefore eligible for the rural origins sub-category for MB ChB entry for 2023.
Unfortunately the Geographic Classification map you provide on your website does not provide certainty as to whether addresses close to the boundaries on your map, are eligible for the rural sub-category. You have previously advised that this information is only available when applications are being processed. However, this is a critical piece of information in deciding whether to make an application to your institution hence this OIA request.
Attendance was from February 2009 - June 2009 and February 2010 to December 2016.
Yours faithfully,
Ms Caughley

Kia ora Ms Caughley
We refer to your information request dated 4 July 2022 made under the Official Information Act 1982. You have requested confirmation whether North Loburn School is within the University of Otago's rural boundary for 2022, and therefore eligible for the Rural Origins Equity Group for entry to the 2023 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) programme.
The advice provided to you previously - that confirmation is only available when applications are being processed - is correct. Confirmation of whether a school is within the University of Otago's rural boundary, and therefore eligible for the Rural Origins Equity Group for entry to the MB ChB programme, can only be confirmed once the applicant applies in eVision, as it requires the verification of the information provided at the time of application.
We note that the GCH map and data is only applicable to residential addresses, not schools. While the GCH map displayed on the University website is only applicable to residential addresses, it is important to note that it should be considered as a guide only.
If an applicant is found to not be eligible under the Rural Origins Equity Group they will be notified, and their application will be processed under the General category. We also note that applicants can apply for entry to the MB ChB programme under more than one category/Equity Group.
We trust you will find this information helpful.
Ngā mihi
