NZSIS communications with groups linked to hostile intelligence organisations

Ali Anwar made this Official Information request to New Zealand Security Intelligence Service

The request was refused by New Zealand Security Intelligence Service.

From: Ali Anwar

Dear NZSIS,

The 'Community Security Group' or 'The NZ Jewish Community Security Group Charitable Trust' is known to be linked to hostile foreign groups like the Embassy Of Israel In New Zealand which engage in activities against New Zealand's national security, such as the fraudulent acquisition of passports to be used to murder Arab civilians overseas. The NZSIS is tasked with investigating threats to New Zealand's national security.

Please:
* detail any formal relationships, scheduled meetings, or other ties to this group
* produce all communications between SIS and this group

Cheers,
Ali

Kia ora Ali

Could you please advise a specific timeframe that you are interested in?

The Official Information Act 1982 requires requests to be specified with due particularity - a specific timeframe enables us to identify information that may be in-scope of your request.

Kind regards

Dear NZSIS,

In regards the 'Community Security Group', I understand that this particular sayanim front group represents itself as being established in 2020, although much of its submission to the Charities Commission has been redacted.

I am seeking information from 1 January 2019 onwards.

Yours sincerely,
Ali Anwar

Tēnā koe Ali,

We refer to your official information request of 8 June 2022 for information about the Community Security Group.

The Official Information Act 1982 requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no later than 20 working days after the day you submitted your request. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time limit and we are, therefore, writing to notify you of an extension of the time to make our decision, to Thursday 18 August 2022.

This extension is necessary because the consultations necessary to make a decision on your request are such that a proper response cannot reasonably be made within the original time limit.

If you wish to discuss any aspect of your request with us, including this decision, please feel free to contact [NZSIS request email].

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone 0800 802 602.

Ngā mihi,

NZSIS
