Kia ora

Thank you for your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the
Act) to the Ministry of Health (the Ministry) on 12 April 2022 for:

“What and how the New Zealand government has done to support, regulate
(decriminalise), and/or fund psilocybin research? And, if there is no
effort regarding psilocybin research, why?”

The Ministry does not have any plans to support, regulate or decriminalise
psilocybin mushrooms. Internationally, psilocybin is included in Schedule
1 of the United Nations (UN) Convention on Psychotropic Substances, 1971.
New Zealand is a signatory State to this international drug control treaty
and includes psilocybin in our domestic drug control regime. The
legislation which controls such substances is the Misuse of Drugs Act
1975. Drugs which pose a very high risk of harm are classified as Class A
drugs. Psilocybin is classified as a Class A controlled drug.

The Ministry does not fund research into controlled drugs. The Health
Research Council of New Zealand may be able to fund such research.

Under section 28(3) of the Act you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be
contacted by email at: [1][email address] or by phone on 0800
802 602.
