World Directory of Medical Schools
D. L. L. made this Official Information request to University of Otago
This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for D. L. L. to read recent responses and update the status.
From: D. L. L.
Dear University of Otago,
Dear University of Otago,
Could you please clarify why the official world directory of medical schools states that ‘an entrance exam is not required’ for entry into the medical programme at Otago.
The University of Auckland in contrast does say an entrance exam is required.
Could you please look into this to avoid the misconception that there is any difference in the standard between the two medical schools.
Yours faithfully,
Dan

We refer to your information request dated 3 February 2022 made under the Official Information Act 1982 (Act).
You have asked “why the official world directory of medical schools states that ‘an entrance exam is not required’ for entry into the medical programme at Otago.”
Otago Medical School does not have a specific or separate ‘entrance examination’ which it requires for the sole purpose of entering its medical school. Completion of Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) is an essential entry requirement into all of the University’s health professional programmes (including Medicine, Dentistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy), and is also recommended for degrees in Biomedical Science. In addition, the University’s Medical Admissions Committee considers applications from candidates with any degree in the Graduate and Alternative admissions categories. Further, Otago Medical School does not have an interview process for applicants, apart from interviews conducted for shortlisted candidates applying via the Alternative admission category.
We note that the World Directory of Medical Schools does not have a set definition of “entrance exam”, and therefore it is for each University to interpret this term as it considers appropriate.
