Personalised Motorcycle Plates

Tyler made this Official Information request to New Zealand Transport Agency

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Tyler to read a recent response and update the status.

From: Tyler

Dear New Zealand Transport Agency,

I’m looking for the appropriate person/s to talk to about getting a design “approved” for a motorcycle personalised plate.

FYI I already own a personalised motorcycle plate. I would like to be able to customise it, in the same way as a standard personalised plate can.

Standard sized personalised plates can currently have red and/or blue colour text and borders. This currently isn’t available for personalised motorcycle plates. I would like to be able to personalise my motorcycle plates, the same way (would like blue text), especially seeing as I’ve paid the same premium price for a personalised motorcyle plate.

I have contacted LicenSys and KiwiPlates about it, however they both said it cannot be done without “approval” from the registrar, which I assume is NZTA.

I rang NZTA last week and didn’t really get any help in terms of finding somebody to talk to who specialises in personalised plate designs/laws. However they did send me this:

Legislation 34.4
“ The unique identifier on a personalised plate must be—
(a)
coloured black or red or blue against a reflective background consisting of white retro-reflective sheeting; or
(b)
in any other form and colour that may be determined by the Registrar.”

The legislation doesn’t state whether this applies to standard plates only or not, so technically it should be legal for motorcycle plates.

Would somebody please get in touch with me to hopefully get this (already available) design approved for smaller personalised motorcycle and/or moped plates?

Yours faithfully,
Tyler
