Medical exemption from covid vaccination

Veronica Rolinson made this Official Information request to Ministry of Health

The request was successful.

From: Veronica Rolinson

Dear Ministry of Health,
What diseases/illness exempts one from being vaccinated? Being as the comirnaty vaccines have presented with a huge range of very serious side effects ie blood clotting, myocarditis, pericarditis - are heart conditions one of the reasons for a person to be exempted from receiving the comirnaty vaccine because it brings to light medical contraindications?

So my query is, are people with heart conditions able to be exempted from taking the comirnaty vaccines? If not, can you please present me with the documentation on why the ministry has deemed taking a vaccine that has caused heart damage to be safe.

Thank you for your time,
Veronica Rolinson

Kia ora Veronica,

Thank you for your email.

For information regarding vaccine exemptions please refer to the following
link: [1]https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/dise....

Additionally, if you have concerns regarding being vaccinated and your
health, we strongly encourage you to contact your general practitioner or
health provider.

We remain confident the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective and
that any risks outweigh the benefits of the protection the vaccine
provides. Like all medicines, the vaccine may cause side effects in some
people, although they are usually mild and don’t last long.

Vaccines are the most powerful tool we have to protect New Zealanders from
the virus, with research showing that vaccination helps reduce
transmission. The known risks of COVID-19 illness and its related,
possibly severe complications, such as long-term health problems,
hospitalisation, and even death, far outweigh the potential risks of
having a rare adverse reaction to vaccination. This is why it is so
important every eligible New Zealander has the opportunity to be
vaccinated, as it protects not only the individual from COVID-19, but
vulnerable members of our community who cannot get vaccinated.

For information regarding vaccination if you have a health condition
please refer to the following
link: [2]https://covid19.govt.nz/covid-19-vaccine...

Further questions can be answered
here: [3]https://covid19.govt.nz/covid-19-vaccine...

Information regarding the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine can be
found on the Ministry of Health website at the following links:

o The Coronavirus Immunisation
handbook: [4]https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/immu...
also provides references to scientific studies conducted regarding
COVID-19 and the vaccine.
o The Vaccine
datasheet: [5]https://www.medsafe.govt.nz/profs/Datash...
o Ministry webpage regarding vaccine safety and
efficacy: [6]https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/dise...

Furthermore, the evidence we have
here: [7]https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/dise...
that vaccination reduces transmission and the severity of COVID-19 if
infected.

Please refer to the vaccination stats that reinforce this:

[8]https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/dise...

The Ministry also regularly updates the Science News page for up to
date information regarding COVID-19 and the
Vaccine: [9]https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/dise...

Given this evidence the Ministry would like to encourage as many people to
get vaccinated as possible to protect themselves and others.

Under section 28(3) of the Act you have the right to ask the Ombudsman to
review any decisions made under this request. The Ombudsman may be
contacted by email at: [10][email address] or by calling 0800
802 602.

Dear OIA Requests C/O The Ministry of Health Ashley Bloomfield.

Thank you for your reply.

I see that Ashley Bloomfied recently announced a warning regarding pericarditis and myocardits post vaccinations. Will the Ministry of Health and Director Ashley Bloomfield be allowing individual exemptions from being vaccinated with the first dose if you already suffer from a heart condition and are unvaccinated?

Thank you for your time.
Veronica Rolinson
