Hi

This request was passed on to me to respond to and I had a question.

It is possible to identify all hospitalisations where the doctor noted
that the patient was suffering from “COVID-19 vaccines causing adverse
effects in therapeutic use“.  Given the heading of this request, I thought
that that information might be of more interest to you than the list of
conditions, which may be impacted by other factors.  So would you rather I
provided the adverse effect hospitalisation data?

If you’d rather have the conditions listed then I’d note that in order for
data to be comparable from 2020 onwards I’d need to limit it to just
casemix (i.e. medical/surgical/maternity) hospitalisations as non-casemix
hospitalisations can take several years for the data to be complete (this
is mostly due to reporting from non-DHB hospitals).

There’s one other filter that I could put over this request that might be
useful.  I can limit the data to just acute hospitalisations (i.e.
unplanned) if that would make the data more useful for you.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Cheers

Dear Chris Lewis,

Thanks for getting back to me,

The data on, “COVID-19 vaccines causing adverse effects in therapeutic use“ sounds like it would be very helpful thank you yes please. Id still appreciate the info on the conditions themselves even if its casemix however ill make sure to take note of that.

Acute hospitlization data would also be very much appreciated please.

Yours sincerely,

C Swanne

Hi

The hospitalisation data we hold is coded using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision, Australian modification. While currently we use the 11th edition, before July 2019 we were using the 8th edition.

The way this classification works, is that the condition that led to the hospitalisation is coded rather than the symptoms where the doctor has made that diagnosis. So, out of your list of conditions, haemorrhage is only going to be coded where no diagnosis was made. And facial paralysis doesn't have a specific code (it gets coded to bells palsy if its related to that, somewhere else if it's cerebrovascular related, or it goes to a generic symptom code).

Here's a spreadsheet with 2 worksheets in it. The first worksheet has the number of acute publicly funded casemix hospital discharges with the primary diagnoses listed. Those diagnoses are what I thought the best fit was for the conditions requested, along with several others I thought might be relevant.

The second worksheet contains all the acute publicly funded casemix hospital discharges with any reported secondary diagnosis code of U07.7 (COVID-19 vaccines causing adverse effects in therapeutic use). I've broken that down by 3 character primary diagnosis. The primary diagnosis is the condition that led to the admission, and the presence of the adverse effect code does not imply that the vaccine caused the hospitalisation. Most of these are coded to T88 (Other complications of surgical and medical care, not elsewhere classified) though, and I think you can assume that those events were.

The events in the second spreadsheet will also be in the first spreadsheet where the primary diagnoses are the same. So these sheets shouldn't be added together.

This data is a count of hospitalisations so people hospitalised multiple times (transfers, readmissions, multiple incidents) will be counted each time.

The data is presented by financial year because hospital data's reporting deadlines, and change cycle are based on 1 July so best practice is to look at this data based on the July-June year.

Finally, we currently only consider data up to 2019 to be "complete". I don't think that the missing data would have much impact on this particular summary though.

I hope this helps. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Cheers
